You know those stories you sometimes see on social media about small changes a person makes that end up having a huge payoff?
Things like
Stuff like that. Sound familiar? It probably does, because those kinds of stories are everywhere.
And, ok, maybe those lemon headlines above are a little exaggerated. But most of the stories we hear about one small change having a dramatic life transformation tend to be a bit sensationalized.
But there’s actually “one small change” you could make to have a huge payoff on your fitness journey.
It’s working with a personal trainer. And that’s not an exaggeration.
Working with a personal trainer can help you unlock your potential and start living the life you envision.
Personal trainers can provide you with a completely customized approach to fitness. And they don’t just provide a specific set of exercises that are best suited for your goals (though personal trainers definitely provide that!). Personal trainers also offer accountability, motivation, and the expertise needed to completely tailor your training for who you are today, who you want to become, and every version of you in between.
Through a blend of fitness expertise, support in and out of the gym, and personalized guidance on everything from your ideal workout schedule to your ideal post-workout snack, working with a personal trainer can be one small thing that can create lasting lifestyle changes.
Read on to find out how working with a personal trainer can transform your life and unlock your full potential.
Personal training provides a lot of benefits beyond what you might already have heard of.
Of course personal training can help you improve your physical fitness. No matter what your goals are, a personal trainer can help you work towards them. And in fact, studies have shown that working with a personal trainer results in greater improvements in physical fitness than either working out with a partner or working out solo.
Maybe you want to build strength, or improve your endurance. Maybe you want to increase your flexibility, or achieve other specific fitness goals. Working with a personal trainer can help you work towards those physical fitness goals.
But personal trainers have other benefits beyond that, too. Personal trainers can actually increase motivation and accountability. That’s because they can help clients stay committed and consistent by setting realistic goals and providing encouragement.
Personal trainers can also develop customized workout plans for every individual client. No two people are the same, so it makes sense that different workout plans will work differently for different people.
For example, maybe you’re recovering from an injury and you need to start working out again in addition to figuring out physical therapy. Or maybe you’re in your second trimester of pregnancy and you need a workout that accounts for your growing belly. Or maybe you have a set workout plan, but you are going to be traveling and won’t have access to any of your normal equipment.
A personal trainer can develop a customized workout plan for you no matter your situation and goals.
And one other thing that a personal trainer can provide that many people aren’t aware of is nutrition guidance. While not all personal trainers are also certified nutritionists, many are. And even personal trainers who are not certified nutritionists are able to provide guidance on food choices that can support your workout goals.
So how do you incorporate a personal trainer into your fitness routine? What exactly is their role?
First, trainers can offer you safe and effective workout routines because they have achieved certifications in fitness and exercise science. Making sure the personal trainer you choose to work with has been certified by an accrediting organization is an important part of selecting a reliable personal trainer.
Personal trainers use this expertise to tailor workout programs to suit each client’s current fitness levels, goals, schedule, and any physical limitations. That also means as your fitness levels change, as your goals evolve, as your schedule shifts and as your physical limitations transform, your personal trainer can tailor your workout program right along with you.
In addition, personal trainers provide support and encouragement. This can result in more consistent exercise, which fosters confidence, resilience, and self-motivation. Studies have actually shown that consistent exercise can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Personal trainers can provide you with the support you need to work out consistently and actually make exercise a habit.
Remember those stories we talked about at the beginning? The ones where someone makes a small change and it has a big payoff?
For many people, the decision to work with a personal trainer is that small change they made, which ended up being life-changing.
Maybe it helped them achieve a specific goal, or overcome an obstacle that had been a stumbling block for them for so long. Maybe it helped them gain confidence, or improve their health in some specific way, or just gain more satisfaction throughout their life. And for many people, the payoff isn’t just physical; it’s mental, too.

Trainwell has helped me to find the balance I needed with working out and the rest of my daily life! I have a chronic injury and I've gotten so strong in just 3-4 months with the program that my coach Carissa has made! My pain is so much less than it was and I can enjoy more and more activities. Carissa is extremely informative and supportive and makes this routine so easy and sustainable. She made me realize I had been overdoing it with working out for so long and this routine has been the perfect balance. I can't wait to see what the future brings! - Member since June 2024
I joined in February of 2024 after having lost all hope in losing weight and most importantly getting stronger and healthier. Everything else I tried in the past failed. Coach Stephany has been truly amazing! She created a personalized plan for me that has really worked! In 3 months I have lost 11 lbs when it had been impossible to lose even 1 lb in the past. She is knowledgeable, kind, empathetic, incredibly engaged. She is absolutely the best and I am very grateful for her help and support! - Member since February 2024
If you’re ready to make that one small change and start working with a personal trainer, here are some tips for finding the right one for you.
First, do some research into the credentials and expertise you’d like your personal trainer to have. This might differ for each person, and should likely be aligned with your fitness goals, so you should also set some goals and expectations for yourself in terms of what you want to achieve.
For example, if you’d like to prioritize building your strength, you might want to work with a personal trainer who is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
Alternatively, if you’re a lifelong athlete recovering from an injury or surgery, you might want to work with a personal trainer who is certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
It’s also important to keep in mind that many of these certifications have significant overlap and are actually quite similar. So if you’re not sure which certification makes the most sense for your goals, that’s ok. Just make sure the certification is “nationally recognized.”
Even more important than the certification your trainer has is their experience working with clients who have had similar goals to yours. So, for example, if one of your goals is to increase your flexibility, you might do some research into how each of the personal trainers you’re considering working with have helped their clients improve flexibility.
One additional thing to consider is budget. Personal trainers can be expensive (though they’re well worth it!). It’s a good idea to do a little research into what goes into personal training costs, which can include your geographic locations and trainer certifications, among other things.
Finally, you’ll want to consider the communication and rapport you have with any potential personal trainers. Just like with any other relationship, good communication and trust are essential for a client-trainer relationship to be successful. If you’re talking with a personal trainer and the communication is off, it might not be a good fit.
Achieving your fitness goals is tough. Figuring out what those goals are, identifying a workout plan that works towards those goals and fits with your schedule, and maintaining consistency and motivation all on your own is a tall order for anyone.
But we know the long-term physical and mental benefits of working out consistently. So how do you find an exercise that works for you, and more importantly, how do you stick with it?
There’s one small change you can make that can have a huge payoff: working with a personal trainer.
Personal trainers aren’t a magic bullet, though. They don’t do your workouts for you.
But they can be there to support you every step of the way as you embark on this next phase of your fitness journey. And they can make sure you’re doing the exercises that are best for your body, your goals, and your schedule.
They can cheer you on as you gain confidence, congratulate you as your physical fitness improves, and validate all the hard work you’re putting into your health and well-being as you achieve your full potential in every aspect of your life.
